But the people who joined the conversation refused to pick a winner.</p><p>But let&#8217;s rewind for a moment. <em>(Imagine that classic movie rewind effect.)</em></p><p>It actually all started with a completely different question.</p></div><h2><strong>How did we get here?</strong></h2><p>It started with something I felt was missing from AI: the ability to organize all my conversations into a structured, searchable database. For me, it was also about something I wanted to delegate. But <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Dont stop the beat.&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:6896526,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:null,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e81eeb4a-c601-4479-9b94-8895f7e3d638_1536x1024.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;3635297d-88f1-44dc-8546-108055594980&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, one of the readers, showed me just how much more there was behind this seemingly simple missing feature.</p><p>During our conversation, they actually suggested a way to solve my problem. Or at least how they would approach it:</p><blockquote><p>Try exporting your threads to PDF and store in NotebookLM maybe.</p></blockquote><p>And then came another option:</p><blockquote><p>I could build an agent to do this task, but the design to minimise API calls would take time and interest.</p></blockquote><p>And that&#8217;s where things got interesting for me.</p><p><strong>A third option enters the game.</strong></p><p>Historically, users have had two options.</p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><h3><strong>Option 1:</strong> </h3><p>Find a manual workaround for the limitations of existing tools. Export something here, reorganize something there, put it all into a spreadsheet.</p><p>That&#8217;s probably one of the reasons Excel is still so popular. I&#8217;ve even seen cases where it completely replaced Jira.</p></div><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><h3><strong>Option 2:</strong> </h3><p>Use an existing SaaS product that solves the problem for you.</p></div><p>But AI has introduced </p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><h3><strong>Option 3: </strong></h3><p>Build your own custom AI agent.</p></div><p>And that&#8217;s where things get interesting. Now users can effectively build their own solutions, indirectly competing with existing SaaS products.</p><div class="pullquote"><p>Watch out, SaaS developers!</p></div><p>So I asked my subscribers a question:</p><blockquote><p><strong>Custom-built AI agents vs. digital products. Products forget, or sometimes even ignore, the user&#8217;s actual workflow. And users end up either adapting their workflows to fit the software, cancelling their SaaS subscriptions, or building their own agents.</p><p>But the irony is that AI agents often have a similar problem. They might do one task really well, but struggle with what comes before and after it in the workflow.</p><p><strong>Will managing multiple specialized agents become a UX challenge of its own?</strong></p><p>Or will we simply have one interface coordinating everything behind the scenes?</p><p><strong>Will custom-built AI agents compete with products in industries like fintech?</strong></p><p>As Monika pointed out:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Adaptation Lab. A few days ago, I shared one signal about AI adoption metrics going up while product satisfaction goes down.</p><p>Just an observation, not a point I was trying to prove. But it became the starting point for an interesting discussion you wouldn&#8217;t want to miss.</p><h2>The people in this conversation</h2><p><strong>Me</strong> <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Tetiana Shevtsova&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:189685620,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:null,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/469549c6-1e56-44c8-a671-861417837d6f_1024x1024.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;adcc294b-3565-4f76-99b3-204f726fed24&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span> with a background in product design and UX strategy, who started the conversation.</p><p><span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Haseeb Afsar&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:159576090,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:null,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0dc75a54-f615-43e1-9445-e5914e314409_500x500.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;affed1b6-9a88-42ce-88a3-6d7aed700fe3&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span> - Head of Engineering at Yahoo.</p><p><span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Timur Tibeyev&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:148753146,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:null,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/52fc569c-6b31-4d8b-aaad-59c6e7954d17_548x548.jpeg&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;60e6feba-4ca9-4abe-ac56-0717d884a54d&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span> - Staff Software Engineer at Canva.</p><p><span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Arun K S&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:9756254,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;pub&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://open.substack.com/pub/arunk5&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/90318b23-6f34-4630-9aa4-3c0be986d735_1280x1280.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;0bdf0fdb-f848-41db-b9f5-b407d1dad3dc&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span> - an AI skeptic with around 28 years of experience in software.</p><h2>What was on the table?</h2><h3>What if we&#8217;re measuring the wrong kind of work?</h3><p>Haseeb brought up a metric I hadn&#8217;t considered: <strong>rework rate</strong>.
